MUSHROOM FEST: A Beltane Celebration
Wednesday 1st May 2024 - The Century, 61-63 Shaftesbury Ave W1
Event commences at 7:00 pm

Beltane is a traditional Celtic festival celebrated on the first of May, marking the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It heralds the arrival of summer and is associated with fertility, fire, and renewal. Historically, Beltane was also a time when ancient Celts foraged for early spring mushrooms, which were revered for their mystical and nutritional properties. To honour this connection, the Century will be hosting a panel designed to explore the intersection of nature, art, and science. We will also celebrate the arrival of a new exhibition by Jana Nicole, the winner of the Prix Puvis de Chavannes and co-founder of The All Things Fungi Festival.

Our panel of fungi experts include:

Mike Green, founder of The London Fungus Network, will provide insights into fungal biology and ecology.

Jana Nicole, award-winning artist and festival co-founder, will discuss her artistic process and how fungi inspire her work.

Macro mycology photographer and festival co-founder, Max Mudie, will share his experiences capturing the intricate details of fungi in nature.

After the panel, Brian d’Souza (also known as Auntie Flo) will be on the decks. His compositions fuse field recordings from around the world with electro-acoustic production techniques to create ‘acoustic ecologies’. Basically, he duets with mushrooms using biosonification to convert the electrical signals from the fungi into MIDI notes, and then running through a synthesiser and array of effects and pedals. The results are incredible.

This event is brought to you by The All Things Fungi Festival.
